There is simply no way to wrap my mind around the violent act of the shooting incident that occurred on the opening night of the showing of the Dark Night in Aurora, Colorado. I have felt sorrow, anger, confusion. I have also, felt grateful, scared and uncertain. It is beyond reason and logic. It is a horrific tragedy.
What can be said or done for the people who have suffered this act of terror or any terror of violence?
- Listen non-judgementally without interrupting.
- Offer your support. Ask them. “Is there anything I can do to help?”
- Ask before hugging or toughing.
- Have patience
- Give it time.
I find comfort in the following poem by Rumi.
The Guest House
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
Some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
Who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture,
Still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice. meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.
Be grateful for whatever comes.
Because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.
